What Are You Reading?

Does anyone have anything they would like to recommend?

Out here with basically no internet and no tv, I read.  A lot.

This is the series I’m reading now.  It’s called Earths Children, but better known as The Clan Of The Cave Bear series. I’m on the 4th one, The Plains Of Passage.  There is one more after The Shelters Of Stone, which I don’t have access to right now but I will.  I read these books long ago…about 25 years, give or take.

I love these books, and these are all available here in the library at CLR.  I have no problem with re-reading books I love.  I’m enjoying them even more perhaps, with this second reading.

Are there books you feel this way about?

What about books about rocks, or rockhounding?  I’d like to learn about rocks.

This is one of my favorite rocks in my ‘yard’.  Below is a closer view.

It’s like marble with green crystal in it.

Amd the rock walls of the wash we walk in intrigue me.

But any books that you’ve read and you have loved, I’d be interested in hearing about!

My favorites are mysteries, especially British police procedurals. My all time favorite is Ian Rankin’s “Inspector Rebus” series. Riveting. And, I like Patty’s recommendation, too!

  3. Christine's avatar Christine says:

The Color of Heaven .. series by Julianne MacLean. There’s 13 in the series and warmly written.

I must also mention subscribing to one or more of the booksellers (I don’t know what else to call them). I like BookBub.com best. I get a daily email from them and there are usually free Kindle books. I have dozens I’ve downloaded, and have learned of many new-to-me authors that way. I found out that I enjoy the genre of “cozy mysteries”! The bonus is that once you have the book downloaded you can read it without WiFi or a phone connection. Also, you can specify the genre you’d like to hear about. Very nice.

  5. I’ve been reading Game of Thrones for awhile between other books. I promised myself that I wouldn’t watch any of the shows until I finished the books. Here are some others I’ve enjoyed recently.

    Nomadland : Bruder, Jessica,
The night trade / Eisler, Barry,
    End game / Baldacci, David,
The midnight line : Child, Lee
    Deep freeze / Sandford, John,
    Paradise valley / Box, C. J.,
Soul of nowhere : Childs, Craig,
    Golden prey / Sandford, John

The Girl on the Train series is good reading! Mystery, suspense and a little bit of romance.

  7. Lisa Tonks's avatar Lisa Tonks says:

Any thing by Michael McGarrity, Margaret Coel, Anne or Tony Hillerman

I’ll have to go through my goodreads list and see what I think you might like based on what you’ve said you like here. Meanwhile, is there a librarian? He/She should be able to guide you to a book about the rocks in your area.

Additionally there’s a website called Fantastic fiction. fantasticfiction.com. You can put in any author that you like and that author’s books will come up, but more importantly, down near the bottom will either be other books that that author recommends, or a section of other authors that writes like the author you put in. So if you like the writing of, say, James Patterson, you can go to his page on this site and see what other authors write similar things.

I haven’t commented in a long time but i still read all the posts. One of my favorite books is ” The Man Who Listens To Horses” very interesting reading if you like horses. It’s a true story.

  10. Jean Lickun's avatar Jean Lickun says:

OH, Do read Louise Penny’s series (in order). They are wonderful!

  11. Velda's avatar Velda says:

Read the whole series as they came out. Check publication dates and you will see how long I had to wait in between! Each time a new one came out I reread the previous. Time to read them again!

  12. Cathy's avatar Cathy says:

How far is the library? I love to browse at the library. You can also put the latest books on hold and then pick them up when they become available. I’ve recently read Grist Mill Road, Her Every Fear, and The Women in the Castle. All these were good. I also read Martin Luther – The Man who Rediscovered God and Changed the World by Eric Metaxas. A very good read. Grandma Gatewood’s Walk – excellent read about a 64 year old woman who walked the Appalachian Trail. Goodreads has excellent reviews and recommendations.

  13. Deborah's avatar Deborah says:

I finished a lovely book called “Ever by my side” by Nick Trout. He is a veterinarian and it’s his memoirs. It made me laugh out loud and cry. I think you’ll love it.

  14. Rochelle in IN's avatar Rochelle in IN says:

Similar to Deborah’s recommendation, the series of books by James Herriott, a British veterinarian, is my all-time favorite.

  15. If you like historical fiction, I loved Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett. It’s a series also.

  16. Paula's avatar Paula says:

If you are interested in identifying rocks, I highly recommend the Smithsonian Handbook of Rocks and Minerals. It has a lot of great photos. I’m a rockhound, and it is my go to book for identification. Smithsonian has another nice book out on Fossils. Amazon carries both.
