Missoula Farmers Market

We leave North Fork, Idaho after a two week stay, and go back to Jim and Mary’s RV Park in Missoula for a few days.  I need my prescription filled at Walmart and to stock up on this and that before we go off into the wilds again.

We meet up with the same friend who wanted to remain nameless in Ronan, MT (because she was hard at work updating “Casita Travel Trailer A-Z Owners Guide”, which she wrote some years back and it is the BEST Casita instruction manual out there. Highly recommended!)  That would be “Arizona Eileen”.  Since she’s finished with that big job she no longer needs to be incognito.

By the way I would also highly recommend Jim and Mary’s RV Park if you don’t mind the expense. ($116 for 3 nights with Good Sam).  It’s a beautiful park (remember all those flowers from a few posts back?) with roomy sites, lots of trees and green grass, many pull throughs and clean, clean, clean!

As it turns out, every Saturday morning in down town Missoula there is a gigantic Farmers Market, and I feel in the mood to go check it out.  I walk around for maybe 45 minutes and don’t see all of it, but that’s ok.

Missoula is home to the University of Montana, with a population of about 70,000.  To me it seems like an old western town mixed with college town, and it does have character!

IMG_9226

To the far left it says “We buy anything” and on the right, the name of the place…”Pie Hole”.  This was across the street from the Farmers Market.

IMG_9221

Joy and Shiloh are not allowed at the Farmers Market so they wait in JR.  It’s not hot yet and the windows are down, as usual.

IMG_9218

Missoula is also a train town.

IMG_9208

There was music, and coffee!

IMG_9220

As you can see here, I was able to get my Soy Latte!  Not infrequently I come across coffee places in my travels that don’t offer options to cow milk.  I probably have the college students to thank for the option here.  They also offered almond milk.

IMG_9211

And now for some fruit and veggie and flower pictures!  This is a tiny sample of what was available.

IMG_9214

Sunflowers and Glads and Snapdragons.

IMG_9215

Huckleberries!  I’ve never even seen huckleberries for sale before and there were many tables like this!

IMG_9217

Greens!

IMG_9212

These cauliflowers are as big as my head!  Not exaggerating!

IMG_9213

Such pretty colors….fruits and veggies are wonderful!

IMG_9228

This is what I came away with.  Basil, cilantro, apricots, fresh bread, leaf lettuce, heirloom tomatoes, corn and huckleberries.

IMG_9231

Oh yeah, how could I forget to tell you I bought this?  🙂  A cherry tart.  It may look like a pie, but truly it’s just the size of the palm of my hand!

Can’t leave Joy and Shiloh out of this post!  Below are pictures of them playing on the leash free island behind Wagonhammer RV Park.

Joy in the foreground.  Shiloh behind.

IMG_9194

Shiloh….tail up!

A little blurry but I just thought it was so cute because Joy’s ears are flopping up as she lopes towards me.  🙂

Tomorrow, August 6, we travel on to Lolo Hot Springs, in Montana near the Idaho boarder.

HI Micky – love Farmers Markets! That looked like a good one! I have a cousin who lives in Belgrade, Montana who mentioned Lolo Hot Springs. I thought she said it was in Montana. Could it be close to the border and the same one?
Our second grand daughter arrived 5 days ago and everyone is doing well, including her 3 yo big sister! We are here with them till Labor Day helping out – it is our pleasure!

    • Hi Patty,
Congratulations on your new grand daughter! Glad all is well! You must be in your glory! 😍
Yes, I love farmers markets too. Always loved going to the one in down town Monterey.

Well I think Lolo is in Montana, and I think Lolo Hot Springs RV Park is in Idaho. NOPE! I looked at the map when I was writing the blog, just to make sure….and it was the Idaho map….but now I just looked again and it’s in Montana. Thanks for catching that Patty. I will correct the blog.

While you are correcting you say that you left North Fork, MT when I think you previously said you were in North Fork, ID. I have been through there and it is in ID. Also, the caption of one of your very good Farmers Market pictures is captioned “These cabbages are as big as my head!” but the picture is of cauliflower.

Enjoy the drive over Lolo Pass and take the Palouse Scenic Byway it is worth the extra time and miles.

        • Hi Ed, thank you, I corrected it. That’s three errors in this blog! Usually I write my blog first in my journal and then edit when I copy it into the laptop. This time I skipped writing it in my journal first…looks like I better not eliminate that step from now on!

I’ll check out the Palouse Scenic Byway.

I have totally enjoyed reading your entire blog and catching up with your adventures….with Joy and Shiloh of course.
My husband and I used to full-time several years ago. We are now the owners of a Casita and look forward to traveling more. I’ve had a year of illness but Lord willing will be back on the road again seeing whatever moves our souls.
Glad I found your blog. Give Joy and Shiloh a big hug. We have a Golden named Jackson that will travel with us!!

    • Hi Gerri, it makes me so happy to know that you are enjoying this blog….and reading the whole thing! That’s more than 2 years worth!
And you have a Casita….I’m glad to hear that you are planning to travel again, but very sorry to hear you have been ill for the past year. Please keep in touch here and let me know how you are doing, when you get on the road, and how the travels go.

Take care Gerri….saying a prayer for you right now.

That Farmers’ Market looks wonderful and how about those very colorful cauliflowers? I wouldn’t have been able to,resist 😊 Have a great time at the hot springs!

  5. Hi Micky!! It’s been a long time, but I have kept up with your blog. Love the looks of the Farmer’s Market..I’m envious. I would probably make myself seriously sick on the fruits & veggies! Am still trying to figure out what to do with my blog, since I want to keep both the traveling & the writing. I’ve gone a lot of miles, seen a lot of friends since I left Houston on the 9th of July. Am at a friends in Wisconsin helping with some remodeling now, and will probably be here for some time. I’ll do my best to stay in touch more often. Give Joy & Shiloh a big hug for me!! And you stay safe!

Amazing! We stayed at Jim and Mary’s with our Casita a couple of years ago in the Fall – it got down below feezing the night we were there. A bit nippy! We left there and headed over Lolo Pass into Idaho and the fall colors were outstanding. I will agree, the Palouse Scenic Byway is not to be missed, the countryside is absolutely gorgeous!
Glad you had a restful and enjoyable time at Wagonhammer. We will have to get back there one of these days with our trailer.
Aren’t Farmer’s Markets wonderful? We have a very good Saturday Market here in Bellingham if you are ever up this way.
    Kitt

    • Hi Kitt,
Sounds like we have been to a number of the same places!

I’ve been looking into the Palouce Scenic Byway, and I may be able to touch on it, but had a plan previously worked out and I think I’ll keep to it, mostly. I’ll very likely be back this way though, and next time I’ll be aware of it before I plan. My friend Marsha drove me around for hours two different times in the Spangle area and south, so I think I have at least an idea of some of the area you and Ed are referring to.

I’ll be in the Lynnwood area for awhile and haven’t planned anything for after that so Bellingham is a possibility after that….still up in the air.
      Love farmers markets!
