“You Can’t Always Get What You Want”

Mick said that!

I wanted to let you know plans have changed again!

The day we arrive here at St Mary Campground in Glacier we take a walk to the visitor center from Loop A which is the only trail dogs are allowed on.  Since we are in Loop C, the walk is maybe a mile and a half, tops.  I notice my lower back feels achy and fatigued, weird because I’d been taking much longer walks with Kerry a couple weeks ago with no problems.

On June 14, the middle right side of my back hurts a bit, and feels like a pulled muscle, but not too bad…till I bend over to do some little thing in the late afternoon and the spasms set in, and since then I’ve been generally not a happy camper.  This seems similar to the episode that happened about 9 months ago and also started while I was in Montana.  It took a month to heal.

I ‘sleep’ sitting up the night of the 14th, afraid that if I get in bed I won’t  be able to get up again.  By the 15th I realize that traveling to Canada right now wouldn’t be a good idea.  I need to call Shirlee and Doug and I have no AT&T.  I go to the visitor center but they have no pay phone.  I know I am going to need to stay somewhere with the comforts of electricity, water and Internet when I have to move on.  I go to the KOA nearby but they are booked solid…also they have no pay phone.  The young lady at the desk offers to let me use her phone, and I tell her I need to call Canada.  She says no problem, she has an international plan.  I leave a message for my friends and hand the sweet lady her phone back with a $5 too, thanking her.

I try another RV park up the road but they are also booked (this time frame runs into the holiday), and there is no pay phone.

I need to talk to the friends I’m supposed to be meeting, and I need to make some reservations  ASAP.  I really need to stay in one place for at least 2 weeks and give myself time to heal.  I need to drive to Browning again to get my AT&T signal, but frankly I’m not feeling well enough to do it.  I decide to go back to WS and try in a couple hours.

Ina couple hours I’m no better and still can’t face the drive.   Tomorrow…

Tomorrow is now today and we are sitting outside the IGA in Browning on the Blackfeet Reservation which is on the east boarder of Glacier.  Browning is 30+ miles from our campground.  I have talked to Shirlee and Doug, and Laura too, and answered comments on the blog.  I’ve answered texts and sent messages to those people I’d given emergency Canada numbers too.  And, I found a place I can stay for two weeks…through the holiday!  Yay!  It’s the same place in Ronan I stayed before I came to Glacier, near the buffalo.  (Bison for Ed. 😃)

So, the other significant line in that song I used to title this blog is “but if you try sometime, you get what you need.” And hat I have been able to do!

I feel so fortunate to be able to live the life I’m living and I’m not going to be complaining because everything doesn’t work out.  I do feel bad though about not being able to meet up with my friends.  It will happen, just at another time, which we don’t have planned yet.

Sorry no pictures today!

I will be out of touch until sometime on the 20th when I leave Glacier.

Take care!  I’ll be mostly resting…we are doing ok.

When you get time get a back brace. It does wonders for taking the pressure off. I know sounds too easy. There have been times when that was my only relief.

    • Thanks Ron, but what kind of brace. I do have the elastic kind that goes around. Is there something else and where would I get it? I’m leaving my connection soon so it’ll be a few days before I get back to the blog.

Wishing you the speediest of recoveries!! I also have a bad back. On very rare occasions, it can leave me totally incapacitated as you seem to be now. Bummer!! That’s why I carry a portable inversion machine which I bought at Big 5 Sporting Goods for just under $100. Of course, easier to do in a 35 foot MH. Never the less, sometimes where there’s a will, there’s a way. 🙂 I use mine at most on average 3 times a week, and only incline about 2/3s the way over. I incline for 30 to 40 seconds. I found that anything more can irritate my spine. But, 30 to 40 seconds is great. It stretches and aligns my spine. I find using it is better than a chiropractor, and a lot less expensive. Of course, I always carry one of your standard back braces, and that helps. Wishing you the best!

So sorry to hear about your back problems. I think you have the right idea…find a comfortable place with the amenities you need and take it easy for a couple of weeks.
    Wishing you well🌺🌼🌸

If you can take Advil or Aleve, it will help the inflammation and help to get over the back ache must quicker. I know this as I too suffer from bouts of back pain once or twice a year. Will say a prayer for a speedy recovery.

    • Hi Callie. Thank you for your prayer! I’m not supposed to take those meds due to other…stuff. Seems to be responding to rest though, and now I’ll be able to use my heating pad. We are at our now place and sitting under a tree in the grass. ( well I’m in a chair on the grass I mean!)

I must be right behind you. Was in Glacier this morning had to leave my teardrop at the visitor center. Thought only tents allowed in. I went through Browning but pretty scary looking town and moved on to Choteau. Nice (reasonable) x KOA under new management. Lots of space good clean showers. Moving on towards Yellowstone but suspect with weekend and summer many places booked. I hope your back problems remedy soon. I read your blog and love it. Am lady traveler.

    • Hi Dottie, so glad that you commented and that you are enjoying this blog! Where were you that you had to leave your Teardrop in the visitor center parking? Ohh… Maybe you didn’t have a reservation at St Mary and there were no spots left? Going to the sun only allows up to 21 feet combined length….
I’m now in Ronan again. Hard to find a place for 2 weeks at this time of year if reservations aren’t made ahead.

I don’t comment often but do enjoy your blog and pics. Feel so bad for you. I am too familiar with back problems. For me ThermaCare wraps, starting with the cold, then the heat helps. Not sure you can get to town or if someone could go for you. Maybe just an ice pack to get some relief. Also a back brace when not using the other. Feel better. You living a dream.

    • Hi Alice. I’m back in the ‘real world’ now, with a Walmart 11 miles away. Not exactly sure when I’ll get there…a couple days I think. I’ll check out what they have. I have an elastic back brace that is wonderful. Is that the kind you mean?

You ARE a nurse and sounds like you have a good idea of how to take care of yourself. You’re wise to rethink your plans and get to a place where you have the comforts of hookups and internet. Hopefully by now you’re there and resting comfortably.

I am so sorry about your back. Hopefully, your taking time to rest will let it heal

    • HimElinor, yes, I’m resting my back this time. I think last time this happened I just waited too long to take it seriously. I have hopes it will take less than a month for it to heal this time.

So sorry to hear that the road has taken a different turn than you had planned. When you get back online just know that I have been thinking of you and sending you lots of healing energy. You have many, many folks who care about you.

Mickie….I’m so sorry to hear of your back issues. I’m glad that you could find a campground with amenities where you can lay low, take it easy, cuddle the doggies and recuperate. Postponing your trip to Canada was the right decision, but hard to do. Wishing you a speedy recovery!

    • Hi Sharon, yes it really was hard to do,but I know I couldn’t have enjoyed it because I just need to sit still…and do stretches….and tiny walks right now. If I don’t pay attention to these needs I could be in much worse shape, so I have to behave! Thank you for your good wishes!
