Visiting Marsha in Spangle, Washington is like taking a time trip back in USA history by about 50+ years. The miles and miles of rolling fields of grain with a farm house planted somewhere in the midst, silos and grain elevators being the tallest buildings in town…and ‘town’ has one gas station that also serves as a small food store, and a couple of stop signs. Tractors are a common mode of transportation.
Marsha retired early from nursing and has been running a highly successful dog boarding kennel here in Spangle, 15 or so miles from Spokane. So successful in fact, that she has bookings for months in advance, even some for Christmas. And it’s no wonder. The love and care she dishes out is just what you would want for your furry family members.
The kennels are cool and breezy with air conditioning and fans, even in this 100 degree heat we are having, and all the dogs get plenty of outdoor time, romping in the lush green grass.

Monday evening Marsha and I take a drive and she shows me the countryside and her family’s large property holdings…she grew up here.
This monument is on their land, and tells the sad story of Native Americans who were lured here to sign a peace treaty, and were hung instead. The area is now called Hangman Creek. There are so many things in our history that can be considered atrocities.
This is the area where it happened.
We end up in Spokane about 15 miles away, and have dinner at Saran Public House, which has many vegan options. We chose to split two of them between us.

It was excellent!
Much of Spokane also gives the feel of having stepped back into the 50’s with so many red brick buildings with faded painted advertisements on the sides of them…but also mixed with modern collage paintings. Wish I would have thought of taking some pictures.
Though it’s been way too hot the last few days…at least 100 degrees in Spokane yesterday…Marsha’s home has air conditioning and the nights have been cool and breezy, perfect for sleeping with all the windows open in WS.

I did this! I parked in this spot between the kennel and the propane tank! And it only took me 15-20 minutes!

It is my dream to be able to rescue all of the unloved dogs in the world. What a great compromise it is for Marsha to be able to provide a loving place for loved dogs to spend time away from their own loved ones! What a fabulous place for them!

Looks like a really gr8 boarding kennel, as well as beautiful countryside…. the monument is touching; so sad that so MANY atrocities continue worldwide, as they probably have ever since human beings have walked the face of this earth….. the vegan dishes look delicious. I’m not totally vegan yet, but am working towards it. Am concerned about too much soy consumption, and so many products contain some form of soy… those are unusual temps for WA this time of year, but normal for my neck of the woods here in FL. Keep cool!
Hi Eileen, so glad to hear that your working towards being vegan! Every time you don’t eat meat or animal secretions is a victory for the animals, so I’m always happy to hear even if someone cuts out meat once a week….and then it kinda grows on you, as you learn more and more.
I know many people are concerned about soy. When I get some time I want to look up the info I’ve read that is pro soy, and post it. There are many doctors and studies that say it isn’t a problem for the majority of us.
The temperatures are supposed to go back into a more ‘normal’ range starting tomorrow. Believe me, that makes Joy, Shiloh and I VERY happy! 🙂
What a beautiful place to visit…and awesome kennel. The Native American story brings such sadness to my heart…why cannot humanity simply be content to love and be loved? Perhaps that kind of cruelty is the reason some of us have such a strong desire to be alone, and just soak up the good & beautiful.

This is beautiful country! We were in Spokane for a weekend last year when we had tickets for Antiques Roadshow at the Convention Center! There is a lovely river walk, and the town is quite interesting. But it was HOT! And that was early June, too, exactly a year ago. The farm country reminds me of central Alberta, hope you’ll see it, too.

Hi Maureen, seems like most everywhere in the north west is hot right now, except the coast…but it’s coming to an end in a couple of days. Then there’s supposed to be rain! 😂
