Finally, Texas!

October 17, in the morning, I enter Texas on Hwy 84.  That was after this sunrise in Santa Rosa…just spectacular.

Sunrise in Santa Rosa!

My brain feels foggy and seems to get more so, the longer I drive.  I stop in Lubbock to spend the night at an RV park with very nice showers and laundry.  I use both.  $23, not too bad.

In the morning I feel quite a bit clearer, but not clear enough to figure out where I want to spend the night of October 18.

I begin driving on 84 again, but then use Hwy 70 because I want to avoid Abilene.  Sweetwater is at the junction of 84 and 70.  A ways before Sweetwater  I begin to see windmills, and on 70 after Sweetwater there are more…and more…and MORE!  More than I’ve seen anywhere….100’s, probably 1000’s!

Windmills AND oil wells

The windmills go on for miles, and that makes me happy! 🙂

I find my way to a little city park in Ballinger.  I read on Allstays that they have 22 campsites here with water and electric.  I wonder if they will all be filled…after all they are only $15, and next to a river.  I arrive to find only one other campsite occupied!  Yay!

Then the fun begins….Joy and Shiloh have a long swim!  After the swim they roll and roll in the (cow pie-

less) grass.  After the rolling subsides I begin brushing them.  I try to brush them daily, because they love it, but also because the more hair they leave in the brush, the less hair they leave in WS.

We take a long walk around the park.  Shiloh resists the temptation to dash after squirrels!  Good boy!

As the sun sets, the river is peaceful and the evening is pleasant.  I think we will rest well tonight.

You are definitely on the move. That Allstay resource what is your review of it and is it free? Hope you get to settle down for a while.

    • Hi Phyllis,
I’ll get to settle for about a week when I get to the Casita Rally. Looking forward to,staying in one place for awhile.
Allstays….it’s an app, and there are many different ones. I think some are free, and some are .99 or so. The one I got was $10. It’s all of the other ones put together that I could need. I think. It has places to stay, gas stations, propane, dump sites, RV repair, and it tells which Walmarts let you stay in their parking lot. Shows places to shop, restaurants…you name it. And it shows you where you are as you travel. When I was looking for the park I stayed in yesterday I don’t know what button I pushed, but it started speaking directions to me. Maybe it will make my dinner too… 🙂

Thanks for the info on the app. Sometimes it just seems like information and app overload. I will wait until I retire and on the road more than I am now. Headed to Hot Springs, Arkansas tomorrow night. Going to overnight it in a casino parking lot, yippee. I used my Black and Decker portable air compressor for the first time today to air up my tires. I always get excited when I do something for the first time. It always seems out of my comfort zone and then bam I do it. And it was pretty easy with electricity.

Looking forward to hearing about the Casita Rally. I need to find one of those to go to.

        • How did you like your B&D air compressor. I think I need a new one. Mine seems to work when it feels like it. It must be retired too!

I like it, don’t really have anything to compare it to. I was able to put air in, that’s a good sign. Before I bought my Casita I bought Arizona Eileen’s CD and that is where I found the suggestion to get one and it was reinforced by reading RVSue. The only I did notice are the cords are pretty short. If you have electrical you definitely need an extension cord. There is a way to use it plugged into a cigarette lighter, or I think it looks a cigarette lighter, but as I write this I am thinking who has a cigarette lighter anymore. Dang it, I will have to look at it again. Anyway if you used the other cord that isn’t an electrical cord you would have to be unhitched. The cord is longer than the electrical but not long enough to go from inside the truck to the Casita wheels.

  4. Welcome to Texas! It’s the “friendly state” you know. You’re in my hometown area…Ballinger and Sweetwater, both close to my heart. Enjoy!

    • I just drove through Sweetwater without stopping, but Ballinger…what a nice little place! An old fashioned little town, and on Sunday almost nothing was open. Nice for the people who work there.
Thanks for the welcome and yes, so far folks have been friendly!

Seems like Joy and Shiloh have adapted to the traveling life well. So glad to hear that you are making time. My apologies if you have mentioned this in a previous post but have you any idea where you will be spending the winter?

    • Hi Rick, yes Joy and Shiloh are doing so well! They are ‘older ‘ too, and would have good excuses to be crotchety about this, but they have been just wonderful. Everything is about them…camping with places to swim, electricity if it’s hot, for the air conditioning if at all possible, short travel days, lots of potty breaks. I like those things too, but I’m really trying to consider their comfort all the time.
I don’t remember if I’ve mentioned anything about winter either, so no apologies needed. :-). The answer is that I just don’t know yet. AZ or southern CA…do you have suggestions? If anyone has good ideas about places to go in the winter, I’m all ears. I’m considering Quartzsite for a brief time….then again, I’m not sure how the dogs will do there? I need to be tending to family things till Thanksgiving, then I’ll be heading in a southerly direction!

Glad to hear allstays was helpful for you. I bought it & look forward to the time (in about 11 weeks) when we can put it to the test. So glad the pups got to swim. Safe travels!
