First Snow

Thursday morning, September 11, it begins to snow as predicted. It doesn’t care that the Rapid City area has not seen snow this early in the season since 1888. Big fluffy, wet flakes fall and they really are beautiful.

I’ve only signed on for three nights here, but I have no desire to drive any distance in the snow. They say they can put me in the ‘overflow’ area. That means I’ll be parking on the street. Doesn’t sound good. I’m in the office trying to figure out what to do and begin talking to a man who is there to pick up his mail. Brian has been full-timing in his Casita for 10 years! He tells me about an RV park on the other side of town that he likes and where there is plenty of space. He says it’s about 10 miles and the roads are clear. He gives me the phone number and I call and tell them I’ll be right over!

I’ve met another RVSue blog follower while at America’s Mailbox. I tell Krystina my situation, we hug good bye, and I’m out the door. When I arrive at LazyJ Campground I immediately feel more comfortable. Only a few spaces are in use and there are nice, snow covered views all around.

I bundle up and walk with Joy and Shiloh. They frolic in the snow and seem entranced while they watch the flakes falling. Joy has seen snow once before,(I don’t think she remembers:-) but Shiloh never has.

Later I go inside and make a big pot of lentil soup. My little heater and the cooking soup keep WS comfy and warm.

Through the night with my two fluffy companions and two comforters I never feel the slightest chill. This morning it’s 30 degrees outside and 62 inside and the coffee is delicious as I watch the sun rise.

My right chest and arm are still sore from my fall, but slowing improving. I feel peaceful. I feel joyful. I’m grateful to be here.

Once again I messed up with pictures! I’ll post them later!

    Sounds idyllic! Enjoy!

  4. I don’t suppose it would suit everyone, and the two days of rain before the snow…with two big dogs…that was trying. But all these experiences are helping me learn what it’s like, and I’m liking what I’m learning.

Glad to hear that you are on the mend and someplace where you can just cozy up until the weather improves.
I remember when my dog Dexter first saw snow when she was a pup. She is Rat Terrier/Chihuahua (think Sues dog Bridgett) and she was NOT amused. We came inside and she just stared at me for 30 minutes as if saying WHAT was that?

    • :-))) What must they think? White fluffy cold stuff falling from the sky…for my dogs it seems to be on the level of a new toy, but for a tiny dog who would get cold quickly, it could be a whole different ball game. πŸ™‚

Wow! Just catching up here. So sorry to read about your fall 😦 Sounds like you’re on the mend, but still hurting — take good care my friend! LOVE the pictures of the kids playing in the snow!!

    • Joy finds joy most everywhere, but snow has really been turning her on. Every patch of snow she saw today, she had to roll in. This girl is going to be 11 tomorrow…going on 3. That is really a good thing though. Shiloh likes it too and I think if he could have been off leash today he would have gone bananas.
I’m hurting more at night because I’ve been using my arm all day..,,so not feeling too great right now.
Moving on tomorrow to Fort Laramie, WY, about a 200 mile drive. Weather should be good, and we’ll have to have a birthday party for Joy when we arrive at our new campground!

Really loved the pictures, especially the dogs in front of the America’s Mailbox sign. I can never get my dog Pepper to sit still for a good shot. Don’t know how you do it with 2 dogs! Hey, how does that work should you have to drive in the snow? Do you have 4 -wheel drive? Chains? Not sure what I would do with my Sunrader if I had to drive in snow. Sounds like you are meeting up with lots of nice people!

    • So far, I’m happy to say, what I’ve discovered about RVer’s is that they are generally a very nice, friendly, and caring group of people. They frequently go out of their way to be helpful. What a nice community to be a part of!
I don’t have 4 wheel drive and I don’t have chains, so if I run into a good amount of snow I just have to stay put until it’s gone I guess!
Generally the idea would be to stay away from snow, but this snow was so unexpected….and that happens sometimes, but it turned into an unexpected blessing. I drove through the Black Hills today and it was like a beautiful Winter Wonderland! (snow had stopped, roads were dry). Scene after scene that would do a Christmas card proud. So as it turns out, I’m GLAD I was here for the first early snow since 1888!
