We Find The Red Rocks!

Friday October 16

It’s only 56 miles to Torrey, Utah where we stay at Thousand Lakes RV Park. Walls of red cliffs line the campground and the road for miles before we get here.

Yes, I’ve seen red rocks before, but somehow things that I see now are more beautiful than the last time I saw them. Somehow my appreciation for the beauty of nature continues to grow.

I need the services of a bank and I wonder where a grocery store might be for future reference. I plan to stay here a week. I ask in the office when I register and the lady tells me there is a bank in Loa right next to the grocery store. That is three towns over. šŸ™‚ After we get settled, I drive to the bank, the post office, and check out the grocery store while I’m there. Also get gas because it’s less expensive here than in Torrey.

Americas Mailbox sent me an email to notify me that JR’s and WS’s registrations are due in November. It’s a grand total of $165.50. If I send them a money order or cashiers check they will register the vehicles in Pennington County, SD for me for $10 each. That’s about a $500 savings of what it would have cost me in CA.

I use my ATM card to get the money at the bank, get the cashiers check, and mail it from the post office.

Thunderstorms are predicted for all afternoon today (now Saturday the 17th), and there are flash flood alerts. The washes can fill up fast, even if the rain is in some distant place. I decide to spend the day at home. The scenery is not too shabby! However, it barely sprinkles here. That doesn’t cancel the flash flood alerts though. There will be other days to see nearby Capital Reef National Park and Grand Staircase Escalante. Also I’m quite excited about the Anasazi Museum in Boulder.

…Now to back up…when we were in Salina we went to Freemont Indian State Park to see Pictographs and Petroglyphs. There were many sites there and I only got to a few of them, but wow, it was impressive.

I tried to upload these pictures a bit larger but i don't have a good enough connection. I hope you can see ok.

How fun. You are wise to be careful when there’s a flash flood alert. Sounds like you’re in a beautiful place and just the tone of the post tells me you’re feeling much better. Sometimes just doing regular things is a victory. We’re heading to the Pine Knot rally on Monday and I thought back to meeting you there last year. We’ll miss you but I know you’re having a great time and Texas is a long way away.

    • Hi Reine, have a wonderful time at Pine Knot! That was fun and I’m so glad I got to meet you and Paul. I have really good memories of our time there. Thank you for all your help and advice back then, and now too.
Yes, I am feeling much better. Just a twinge here and there which is probably a good thing…reminds me to take it easy.
We went out for a few hours today between the flash flood alerts, and visited Capitol Reef. Place leaves me speechless. One of the roads we were on for 10 miles had 15 washes on it…was glad to get safely back.

Sounds fantastic. You are in one of my favorite corners of the world, and I speak from experience in saying that you are smart to pay attention to the flash flood watches. Interesting about how things seem more beautiful now than in the past. Slower pace? Wiser woman? Solo? Seeing life through the eyes of a dog? Maybe there’s a blog post in there somewhere. But whatever your comfortable sharing is fine by me.

Speaking of comfortable, really happy that you seem to be feeling better. Keep it up. Give Joy and Shiloh a hug from all of us here in the soon to be frozen north. As always thanks for letting us tag along.

    • Yes, all of that Badger Rick….all those things you mentioned are part of it.
We ventured out between the flash flood alerts today and went to Capitol Reef which is close by. All the washes I went across…at least 15 of them were obviously flowing during the rain last night, though more dry than not as I crossed them today….yay!

Yes,feeling much better thank you! Doggie hugs given! Frozen north…oh boy…how well I remember those Michigan winters…probably just about equal to your Wisconsin winters.

For what it is worth, I stayed at Sand Creek Park in Torry for a month. Read all about it at http://edwardfrey.com/peregrinating/period54.html#10

  5. Hi Ed, yes that’s down the road about a mile or so. Same lovely views of the red cliffs as this place. I’m just awed by this beauty. Think I’m heading to Moab next. A friend (Patty, who posts here sometimes) recommended an RV park there. Have you stayed there too? Your pictures with snow on these red rocks are just beautiful.

I have avoided Moab, too touristy for me. Capital Reef and Torry have about as many tourist as I can handle. I generally avoid National Parks also because of their dog discrimination policies.

  7. I understand. But for me, there are things I want to see, so I work around the (other) tourists, and the national park dog rules. I don’t mean I break the dog rules…well maybe bend them a tad…but there are things I want to see in too many National Parks to avoid them. Like yesterday, I couldn’t walk them on the trails at Capitol Reef, but they could get out at stops, walk near the trails, down the roads, around the parking areas.
